Der englische Komponist und Dirigent Robert Vaughan Williams hat zahlreiche britische und nordamerikanische Folk-Lieder gesammelt, hat aber auch Arrangements für Lieder aus Sammlungen Dritter kreiert. 14 der hier enthaltenen 23 Songs wurden 1900 von Percy Merrick im südenglischen Sussex gesammelt und später von Vaughan Williams neu arrangiert. Die 23 Stücke werden von der englischen Sopranistin Mary Bevan, dem schottischen Opernsänger Nicky Spence und dem Bariton Roderick Williams gesungen.
