Info zu The Rest Of The Story
Big Wreck releases their highly anticipated new album, "The Rest of the Story". Recorded at Noble Street Studios, the album was written, composed, and co-produced by frontman Ian Thornley, alongside acclaimed producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Deftones, Evanescence, Alice in Chains). With engineering by Chris Holmes, mixing by Eric Ratz (Danko Jones, Cancer Bats, Arkells), and mastering by Andy Vandette (Rush, David Bowie). The project brings together an all-star team to deliver Big Wreck’s most dynamic work to date.
“I’m after that feeling that only music can give you, and the excitement of pushing the dust away. What’s here? What’s this? And then building it. When we’re talking about all this music, it feels like one continuous extension. If we consider the songs from Pages, to us they’re all part of the same album, this is the Rest Of The Story.” (Ian Thornley)
“We’ve always been really great about listening to each other and working towards the end goal of making the song as great as it can be.In the last three or four things we’ve done together, they’ve shaped up like that. We get the song in that form, go in and record it, and there’s still space for spontaneity. We get in a great creative space when we’re in the room together. I love it.” (Nick Raskulinecz)
“If you’re lucky enough to be doing this as long as we’ve been doing it, you tend to find the people, or they find you. If there’s something there that you believe in, sometimes it doesn’t just show up. They don’t all just fall into your lap. Some of them would require a lot of scratching and clawing, but you have to believe in it.”
This album was made at the same time as 2023’s Pages, and these songs were living with them during the process, and of course now, well after. The initial plan was to release three separate EPs, but it was squashed in favor of being a full-length, leading to Pages. This is just the rest of the story.
“It’s interesting,” laughs Thornley. “I’ve never really been in this situation before, where there’s been, however long it’s been [between albums]. When you listen to things that you’ve recently finished, you tend to focus on things that you would have done differently. Listening to it over the weekend, it hit me very differently. I was moved. I was frankly moved by the music. It’s very open and honest and authentic.”
When making the music, the sound touches on so many different things and they avoid pigeonholing at all costs. They splash some progressive around, a smattering of psychedelic rock, and blend it all in with a little classic rock, and something dubbed post-grunge blues rock was born. All in all, though, there has to be a core of authenticity, and a use of imagery to do a fair part of the heavy lifting; let it elicit a feeling from the listener.
“Artistically, and creatively, it’s always nice when some of the lines are left unfinished. When some of [it] is not quite framed yet, when some of the colors aren’t filled in all the way, it’s always nice to leave yourself a little room to be inspired. The expression we’ve been using is, ‘don’t spend too long at the salad bar.’ I’ve never done anything else. I don’t think I could, to be honest. This is all I’ve ever done. It just occurred to me that I don’t think a lot has changed in what I do musically. It’d be hard to say from this vantage point, but I still think the thrust of whatever it was that I was looking to feel from a piece of music. It’s still the same curiosity.” (Ian Thornley)

Big Wreck
was formed in Boston in the early 90’s by Toronto-native (guitars / vocals) Ian Thornley and Americans Brian Doherty (guitars), Forrest Williams (drums) and Dave Henning (bass), students at the Berkley School of Music. Their 1997 debut album, In Loving Memory, is certified double platinum in Canada and featured the chart topping singles “Blown Wide Open,” “That Song” and “The Oaf”.
In 2002, the band broke up following the release of their sophomore album, The Pleasure and The Greed, after which Ian Thornley formed the band Thornley who also enjoyed rock radio success with several singles.
In 2010, Brian Doherty filled in on guitar at a Thornley show and shortly thereafter, he and Ian started working on new material that would be, once again, christened Big Wreck. Their first single as a reunited Big Wreck, “Albatross,” became the band’s first #1 single at Rock radio in Canada. Since then, they have released three new Big Wreck albums (Albatross – 2012; Ghosts – 2014; Grace Street – 2017). In the winter of 2018 Big Wreck began recording their sixth studio album with producer Erik Ratz. It was during the recording that Doherty was diagnosed with cancer which tragically took his life this past Spring after the new album was completed. Big Wreck’s latest album will be released later this summer followed by extensive touring. The release of the album was preceded by the Top 5 Rock Radio hit “Locomotive.”
