Info zu J.S. Bach: Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin

The Sonatas and Partitas, BWV 1001–1006, by Johann Sebastian Bach are compositions written for solo violin in accordance with Bach's headings in the autograph manuscript. The set consists of three sonatas (da chiesa), in four movements, and three partitas (or partias), in dance-form movements. The 2nd Partita is widely known for its Chaconne considered one of the most masterly and expressive works ever written for solo violin.

The set was completed by Bach in 1720 but not published until 1802 (by Nikolaus Simrock in Bonn). Even after its publication, the work was largely ignored until the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim performed it. Today, Bach's Sonatas and Partitas are an essential part of the violin repertoire, and they are frequently performed and recorded.

The Sei Solo a Violino senza Basso accompagnato (Six Solos for Violin Without Bass Accompaniment), as Bach titled them, firmly established the technical capability of the violin as a solo instrument. The pieces often served as archetypes for solo violin pieces by later generations of composers, including Eugene Ysaÿe and Bela Bartok.

Alberto Bologni studied with Sandro Materassi at the Florence Conservatory graduating with full marks and honors. Later he deepened his studies with Stefan Gheorghiu and Ilja Grubert earning his soloist diploma at the Rotterdam Conservatory; and with Piero Farulli at the Chigiana Academy of Siena and at the Fiesole School of Music. Alberto was awarded at the Viotti di Vercelli and Spohr competitions in Freiburg. He holds the chair of violin at the Institution of High Culture "Luigi Boccherini" in Lucca.

This recording, made inside the Pieve di Sant'Eusebio, an historical church in Bassano del Grappa, was captured by the producer, Alessandro Simonetto, with a pair of Bruel & Kjaer microphones of the 80s.
