This new album of harpsichordist Catalina Vicens is a unique, multifaceted musical and poetic project. First, it features the world’s oldest playable harpsichord, a priceless treasure that dwells today in the National Music Museum of Vermillion, SD. She plays music from Naples, Italy from around 1525, the year when the instrument that she plays was actually built in Naples. Secondly, Ms Vicens conceived an imaginary tale of the life and story of that very instrument, partly based on historical facts, partly on poetic inspiration emerging from her encounter with this priceless treasure of a historical harpsichord.

Catalina Vicens
Catalina ist in Santiago de Chile geboren. Früh schon begann sie, Klavier zu lernen, und mit 18 erhielt sie ein Stipendium für ein Cembalostudium bei Li- onel Party am Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Nach ihrem Diplom am Curtis Institute setzte sie ihre Studien an der Musikhochschule Freiburg bei Robert Hill und an der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (in Basel) bei Andrea Marcon fort. An der Schola absolvierte sie zudem ein weiteres Diplomstudium im Fach Mittelalterliche Tasteninstrumente bei Corina Marti und ein Nachdip- lomstudium im Fach Zeitgenössische Musik auf historischen Tasteninstrumenten an der Musik Akademie Basel. Catalina hat Meisterkurse bei unter anderem Gustav Leonhardt, Jesper Christensen, Christophe Rousset und Mitzi Mey- erson besucht. Ihr Interesse an historischen Schlaginstrumenten führte sie zu Kursen mit Pedro Estevan, Michael Metzler, Philippe Tarr und den iranischen Perkussionisten Madjid Khaladj.

Bereits in jungen Jahren spielte Catalina an Orten wie dem Kimmel Center (Philadelphia,USA),demTeatroColon(BuenosAires,Argentinien),demTeatro Municipal (São Paulo, Brasilien), dem Theater Basel (Schweiz), dem Kunst- palast (Budapest, Ungarn) und der Semperoper (Dresden, Deutschland), und sie war in den USA, in Chile, Deutschland und der Schweiz im Radio zuhören. Sie spielte unter der Leitung von berühmten Dirigenten wie Gottfried von der Goltz, Andrea Marcon, Mario Videla, Joseph Silverstein, Otto-Werner Müller und Carlos Miguel Pietro.

2008 gewann sie den ersten Preis beim Internationalen Fritz-Neumeyer-Wett- bewerb für historische Tasteninstrumente (in Deutschland). Catalina Vicens gastiert mit Solokonzerten auf den Bühnen Europas, Südamerikas und der USA und spielt in mehreren Ensembles Musik aller Epochen, vom Mittelalter über Renaissance und Barock bis zur heutigen Zeit. Sie hat auf Einladungen hin Vorträge und Meisterkurse in Zentraleuropa, Großbritannien, Skandinavien sowie Südamerika gehalten.
