Renowned pianist-composer Wayne Horvitz conducts his 14-piece Seattle ensemble in 11 of his classic jazz/Americana tunes, adapting Butch Morris’s conduction system to deconstruct/recompose them in performance. Horvitz uses numbers and hand signals to draw from the musicians, individually or in continually shifting small groups, a performance that reinvents and reinvigorates the music in endlessly surprising ways. The result is a set of dynamic large ensemble jazz compositions with a high degree of freedom at both microscopic and macroscopic levels; they are also a true pleasure to listen to.
