Info zu Romaria: Choral Music from Brazil

‘Romaria’, a word suggesting pilgrimage, crowds and processions, evokes much of what is distinctive about modern Brazil – its mix of people, its vibrancy, its faith. This survey of modern Brazilian choral music reflects these qualities, as well as the natural wonders of this amazing land. Geoffrey Webber and his ever-adventurous choir sing both sacred and secular works dating from the 1950s through to the present, in a programme developed in conjunction with experts from the University of São Paulo’s music department. This collaboration also led to the reconstruction of the rainforest soundtrack that originally accompanied Henrique de Curitiba’s inventive and unusual piece 'Metaphors'. Founded in 1348, Caius College Choir is one of Britain’s leading collegiate choirs and this is their eighth recording on Delphian. Among the accolades they have received, their 2014 release ‘In Praise of St Columba’ (DCD34137) was BBC Music Magazine’s Choral and Song Choice in September 2014, enjoying five weeks in the UK Specialist Classical Chart, as well as five star reviews both at home and abroad.

"The rainforest tape that opens this remarkable disc might seem a Brazilian cliche - and in a sense it is. But it is a significant one...Much of it is technically demanding but, under Geoffrey Webber's clearly inspired direction, the Caius Choir sound as though they have known this music intimately for years." (Gramophone Magazine)

"Another disc to reinforce my opinion that the music of Latin America is as astoundingly rich and rewarding as it is under-appreciated." (MusicWeb International)

"You may not have realised your life lacked a disc of modern Brazilian choral music, complete with rainforest soundtrack and talk of hummingbirds, alligators, pollution and clothes-washing. This enchanting album may convince you otherwise." (The Observer)

"This anthology could be a dull, academic exercise, but it's fabulous. Director Geoffrey Webber's sleeve notes tell you everything you need to know about each work, but my advice would be to listen first and read later. Performances are consistently stunning. Diction is impeccable, and the whole packs an exhilarating, very un-English punch. Magical, and magnificently recorded. Which neglected choral sub-genre will Webber tackle next?" (The Arts Desk)

The Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge
is a collegiate choir in the University of Cambridge, until recently directed by the Buxtehude scholar Geoffrey Webber.[1] The Director of Music at the college is by tradition known as 'Precentor'. The current Precentor (since April 2020) is Matthew Martin.

The college awards a number of choral exhibitions every year to incoming students, and these choral exhibitioners make up most of the choir; the choir is also supplemented by a number of volunteers, who are often from other colleges. The choir sing three services per week during term-time, on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.[2] Owing to the Precentor's wide-ranging interests the choir sings an eclectic mix of repertoires, and has developed a niche for resurrecting forgotten repertoires:[3] the CD released in June 2014 is of Celtic chant from the 8th to 12th centuries with the virtuoso piper Barnaby Brown, whilst their most recent recording project, which is yet to be released, is of South American choral music.
