In 2026, ABC Jazz is thrilled to be celebrating 50 years of its flagship program Jazztrack. Begun by Jim McLeod in January 1976 and programmed and presented since 2004 by Mal Stanley, Jazztrack has been recording Australian jazz and improvised music since its earliest broadcasts, giving valuable airtime to Australian artists and chronicling the development of the jazz scene around the country.

This album brings together some of the riches to be found among the many fine studio recordings made for Jazztrack. The main difficulty, says Mal Stanley, ‘was not what to choose but what to leave out! With hundreds of recording sessions to explore, this can only be a small representation of the incredible music-making that has occurred – and still occurs – in Australia.’
