The bandoneon is a type of concertina which has been an essential part of traditional tango ensembles for the past century. Award-winning Italian composer Roberto Di Marino explores the breathtakingly virtuoso and sensual qualities of this distinctive instrument in his Concerto, with its driving syncopated rhythms and melodies which tug at the heartstrings. Ástor Piazzolla singlehandedly created the ‘nuevo tango’ genre, and his haunting Oblivion is one of his most intensely expressive creations in this style. He described the Five Tango Sensations as “a musical farewell to life”.

Tango music and the bandoneon are hugely popular, and Roberto Di Marino rewards our expectations with his brand new Concerto for Bandoneon and String Orchestra. This impressive work builds on the romantic idiom of Ástor Piazzolla, spectacularly extending the virtuoso boundaries of the solo instrument over exciting rhythms and heartwarming harmonies.

Coupling this with some of Piazzolla’s most evocative music is a natural choice which will add to the attraction of this release, while acclaimed soloist Cesare Chiacchiaretta is universally admired amongst fellow musicians and audiences as a widely travelled ambassador for his instrument.

Cesare Chiacchiaretta
born in Chieti devoted himself to the study of the accordion at a very young age, taking up the bandoneon later. He studied under Maestro Claudio Calista at the Music Academy of Pescara, graduating with distinction at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatory of Bari in 1995.

Later, he perfected his skills under renowned maestros such as Max and Christiane Bonnay, Vladimir Zubitsky and Mogens Ellegaard. Cesare Chiacchiaretta has performed for the most prestigious concert institutions in Italy and abroad (France, Russia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, Croatia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, etc.) both as a soloist and in several chamber music ensembles.

He was awarded many prizes at the most important national and international competitions for soloists and chamber music ensembles. In 1993, he won the first prize at the “Città di Castelfidardo” international competition. No other Italian musician has ever won this prize since. In 1991, he was chosen to be the only Italian representative at the Unesco C.I.A.I.M.C. World Cup.

In 1993, he was invited to represent Italy at the 43th Accordion World Trophy in Setubal, Portugal. His great interest in chamber music leads him to collaborate with renowned musicians and actors such as Corrado Giuffredi, Lorna Windsor, Danilo Rossi, Giuseppe Ettorre, Nando Gazzolo, Arnoldo Foà, Elio, Rino Vernizzi, Massimo Mercelli and ensembles such as Cuarteto del Angel, Trio sin Palabras, Quartetto Mahagonny, exploring the most varied repertoires.

He has been playing as part of the accordion quartet Accord’Ance since its formation, holding many concerts and achieving important results at international competitions. He has recorded for many radio and television broadcasters in Italy and abroad (Rai Uno, Radiotre, Tv Korea, Tv Romania, etc.).

He has always been passionate about Astor Piazzolla’s music of which he is a real connoisseur. As a soloist, he has played with major orchestras and conductors ( particularly worthy of note is the collaboration with the Kaunas Chamber Orchestra-Lithuania conducted by Pavel Berman and, most of all, the Orchestra Vox Aurae conducted by the famous Cuban Maestro Leo Brouwer), performing the most significant solo works composed for his instrument.

In 2006, he played at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, with the Orchestra Sinfonica “L. Cherubini” conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti, performing Nino Rota’s music. The passion he transmits when teaching has led his students to achieve significant results at the most important international competitions.

He is currently an accordion teacher at the Conservatory “T. Schipa” in Lecce.
