Joni Mitchells Meisterwerk “Blue” feierte vor wenigen Tagen seinen 50. Jahrestag. Aus diesem Anlass veröffentlicht Rhino zwei neue Sammlungen, die unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf eines der größten Alben aller Zeiten bieten und einen Einblick in die ungebremste Kreativphase geben, aus der dieses Meisterwerk hervorging.

Den Startschuss für die Feierlichkeiten gab die Veröffentlichung von BLUE 50 (DEMOS & OUTTAKES), eine digitale EP, die genau zum 50. Jahrestag des Albums am 22. Juni 2021 erschien und fünf unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen aus den Sessions zu “Blue” vorstellt, die auf der kommenden “Archives”-Sammlung erscheinen werden. Das augenfällige Cover der BLUE 50-EP zeigt die ursprüngliche Farbbehandlung von “Blue” mit einem bisher ungesehenen alternativen Foto Mitchells von Tim Considine aus demselben Konzert wie das Original.

Jeder Track auf “BLUE 50 (DEMOS & OUTTAKES)” ist ein Highlight, darunter die Demos für "California" und eine frühe Version von "A Case Of You", die einen anderen Text als auf dem finalen Album enthält. Es gibt auch zwei alternative Takes auf der EP – eine Version von "River", in der neben Mitchell solo am Klavier (wie auf der Albumversion) zusätzlich Waldhörner zu hören sind, sowie ein alternativer Take von "Urge For Going". Mitchell hatte den Song ursprünglich Mitte der sechziger Jahre geschrieben und regelmäßig in ihre frühen Live-Sets mit aufgenommen. Während der Sessions für “Blue” griff sie den Song wieder auf und spielte eine Version mit Streichern ein, die sich von jener Version unterscheidet, die später als B-Seite ihres 1972er-Hits "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" veröffentlicht wurde. Beim letzten unveröffentlichten Song handelt es sich um die Studioaufnahme für "Hunter", ein weiterer Track, der in letzter Minute aus “Blue” rausgekürzt wurde. Mitchell führte ihn später regelmäßig live auf, doch er wurde nie offiziell auf einem Album veröffentlicht.

Alle fünf Tracks werden auch auf JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES VOL. 2: THE REPRISE YEARS (1968-1971) enthalten sein.

Die Tracks auf “ARCHIVES VOL. 2” wurden chronologisch geordnet, um Mitchell in Echtzeit durch eine der kreativsten Perioden ihrer Karriere zu begleiten. Die Sammlung fördert mehrere unveröffentlichte Mitchell-Originale zutage, darunter "Jesus", das sie 1969 in der Wohnung ihrer Freundin Jane Lurie in Chelsea, New York aufnahm, die auch als Setting für den Song "Chelsea Morning" diente.

Weitere Highlights sind Mitchells Auftritt im Le Hibou Coffee House in Ottawa am 19. März 1968 (aufgenommen von niemand Geringerem als Jimi Hendrix!) und ein Konzert im Paris Theatre in London am 29. Oktober 1970, das von der BBC ausgestrahlt wurde. Letzteres enthält mehrere Songs, die im folgenden Jahr auf “Blue” erscheinen sollten: "Carey", "River" und "My Old Man". Außerdem gesellte sich der Singer-Songwriter James Taylor in der zweiten Hälfte des Konzertes zu Mitchell auf die Bühne.

Joni Mitchell began as the archetype of the folkie female singer-songwriter, an heir to Joan Baez. But she quickly moved forward, incorporating influences from jazz and the blues.
