Info zu Nonlinear Independence

The title of this album alludes to the mathematical concept of linear independence , depicted by the formula on the album cover. The concept describes a relationship between elements in a group, or a set. An element is considered dependent if it can be constructed from manipulating or combining the other elements in the set. Conversely, an element is independent if it brings something unique to the group and cannot be replicated through some combination of the others. I find this idea particularly relevant to music. While I consider my musical style to be heavily influenced by my heroes, it is not simply a manipulated repetition of their art. Their influences are present in my music, but the way I combine and interpret them is distinctly my own.

The album title, however, is Nonlinear Independence , which is not an actual mathematical term, but rather a play on the concept of linear independence and the nonlinear nature of my own musical journey. Like life, that journey has rarely followed a straight path. Beginning as a classical pianist and violinist early on, falling in love with the trumpet years later, and attempting to balance all three throughout school before ultimately choosing not to choose has created so many interesting loops and unexpected turns along the way. This idea is reflected in the three-letter prefix, the “Non, ” that serves as another representation of the different paths that have converged to shape my musical identity.

Sam Leviatin

Sam Leviatin
is a composer, arranger, researcher, and trumpet player based in New York and Miami. Currently pursuing a Masters in Jazz Pedagogy at the Frost School of Music under the mentorship of Brian Lynch and Chuck Bergeron, Sam continues to develop their multi-faceted approach to music. As a scholar, they have been published in the peer-reviewed MUSE Journal for research about improvisation in education across musical disciplines. They have also been honored with the Jazz Education Network’s David Baker Scholarship Award, among other notable achievements such as receiving multiple Downbeat Student Music Awards for their compositions and performance.

In addition to these awards, Sam has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts, and numerous spaces throughout Austria, Italy, and Cuba. In school, Sam performs and records with highly acclaimed ensembles such as the Grammy-nominated Frost Jazz Orchestra and Downbeat-celebrated Funk Fusion Ensemble, as well as with the Studio Jazz Band and Latin Jazz Orchestra. Sam also enjoys recording for their peers, appearing on the soundtrack of the 2024 video game “Ready, Steady, Ship” and on many Frost-recorded and produced jazz and contemporary albums alike. Sam is also a versatile arranger and composer whose compositions have been performed and recorded by prestigious Frost ensembles and at the Litchfield Jazz Festival and Summer Camp. In addition to their various trumpet and compositional projects, Sam performs and records on violin as well, and continues to pursue academic passions, graduating with a minor in mathematics and conducting musicological research in their “free time”. Sam is also passionate about education and teaching, working to give back to their community through music lessons. As a Teaching Assistant, Sam works with students to guide their understanding of complex musical concepts. They have worked with faculty at the University of Miami to run math workshops for students, and organize music theory classes for freshmen. Sam aspires to continue their dual role as educator and performer, shaping the next generation of musicians.
