Info for French Chamber Music with Winds and Piano

Nine brilliant pieces that reflect french music for winds' golden age: The combination of instrument manufacturing progress and the development of wind classes at the Conservatoire de Paris end of the 19th century inspires many composers. The repertoire for these instruments continues to grow and generates new melody and harmony ideas. Because of the variety of colors obtained with wood instruments (flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon) with brass (horn), wind quintets, with their muted, clear and powerful sounds are more and more popular.

The movement led to the establishment of several wind instrument companies: the Société Nationale de Musique founded in 1871 by composer Vincent d’Indy, the Société de Musique de Chambre pour Instruments à Vent, by flutist and composer Paul Taffanel (1879) as well as the Société Moderne pour Instruments à Vent by flutist and composer Georges Barrère (1895). Winds will take advantage of this creativity and emancipate from the symphonic repertoire, their only role then.

The composers, recorded in this album are the direct heirs of this new music momentum at the turn of the century, with typical French sounds, full of subtilities. The program provides four wind quintets but also solos of each instrument (with piano) in five different pieces. ...
