Händel komponierte diese beiden Kantaten kurz nach seinem Italienaufenthalt (1706–1709), und sie zeigen, dass er mit der italienischen Opernmusik vertraut war und sie zu schätzen wusste. Im Vergleich zur Oper werden in diesen relativ kompakten Kantaten die Nebenrollen weggelassen, wodurch die Hauptfiguren stärker in den Mittelpunkt gerückt werden und die Musik eine größere Ausdruckstiefe erhält.
Apollo e Dafne (Apollo e Dafne, HWV 122) ist eine weltliche Kantate, die Georg Friedrich Händel 1709-10 komponierte. Händel begann 1709 in Venedig mit der Komposition des Werks und vollendete es in Hannover, nachdem er 1710 nach Hannover gekommen war, um seine Stelle als Kapellmeister des Kurfürsten, des späteren Königs Georg I. von Großbritannien, anzutreten. Das Werk ist eine der ehrgeizigsten Kantaten Händels und ein Hinweis auf die brillante Opernkarriere, die in den nächsten 30 Jahren seines Lebens folgen sollte.
Da die Ouvertüre des Werks nicht erhalten ist, wird manchmal ein anderes Instrumentalwerk des Komponisten als Einleitung aufgeführt.[citation needed] Die Besetzung der Kantate ist hell, da Händel zu den üblichen Streichern eine Flöte, ein Paar Oboen und ein Fagott hinzufügt.
