Im September 1966 trafen sich der Organist Jimmy Smith und der Gitarrist Wes Montgomery in Rudy Van Gelder's berühmtem Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Im Laufe von drei Tagen nahmen die beiden Jazz-Ikonen das Material für zwei mittlerweile klassische Alben auf: The Dynamic Duo (1966) und Further Adventures of Jimmy and Wes (1968), unterstützt von einer Big Band mit Arrangements des großen Oliver Nelson.

Dieses Paar elektrisierender Ausflüge sollte sich in den folgenden Jahrzehnten als bahnbrechend für ein weiteres dynamisches Duo erweisen: Der große Bassist Christian McBride und der Meisterorganist Joey DeFrancesco würden die Grooves auf ihren Kopien der Gipfeltreffen von Smith und Montgomery während ihrer Highschool-Zeit abnutzen, und beide würden während einer fast 40 Jahre währenden Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit Prüfsteine bleiben.

Für Jimmy erinnern Wes und Oliver an das Format der ursprünglichen Smith/Montgomery-Gipfeltreffen, mit einer ausgewogenen Mischung aus Big-Band- und Quartett-Tracks. Um die Kernband zu vervollständigen, holte McBride einen weiteren langjährigen Freund und Mitarbeiter, Mark Whitfield, für die Rolle des Montgomery, während der reguläre CMBB-Schlagzeuger Quincy Phillips das Ensemble moderiert.

When Philadelphia-born bassist/bandleader Christian McBride arrived in New York in 1989 as a Juilliard student, he was the “Godchild of the Groove” with unlimited potential.

Christian McBride is a master musician who has appeared on over 300 records. He is easily one of the most accomplished bass players alive, and his resume as a bandleader is also quite impressive. Join us at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to experience New Jawn, which, translated from Philadelphian, could be described as McBride’s “new joint.” The quartet includes Josh Evans, Nasheet Waits and Marcus Strickland, musicians that are regularly featured at Jazz at Lincoln Center and all over the city both as bandleaders and as sidemen with some of jazz’s biggest names. Fans of McBride’s other small groups will surely love this ensemble, and its unusual two-horns, no-piano lineup gives it a unique flavor. With just bass and drums holding down the rhythm section, McBride and Waits provide as rich and driving a foundation as any group could hope for.
