Der Zappa Trust hat ein umfangreiches Box-Set zusammengestellt, um den 50. Jahrestag der "Mothers Of Invention"-Besetzungen von 1971 zu feiern. Es enthält die kompletten "Fillmore East"-Bänder, die jede Note zeigen, die in 2 Nächten in 4 Shows während der Schließung des berühmten Veranstaltungsortes in NYC gespielt wurde, einschließlich der Zugabe von John Lennon und Yoko Ono, unbearbeitet mit der Mehrheit der Tracks, die von Grund auf neu von Craig Parker Adams gemischt und von John Polito gemastert wurden. Ebenfalls enthalten ist das komplette Konzert der letzten Show im Rainbow Theatre in London, England, bei der FZ von der Bühne gestoßen wurde, was zu Verletzungen, der Absage der restlichen Tournee und schließlich zur Auflösung der Band führte. Diese historische Rainbow-Show wurde von der Legende Eddie Kramer neu abgemischt und von Bernie Grundman gemastert.

Im August 1971 erschien das Album „Fillmore East - June 1971“ mit den nur zwei Monate zuvor entstandenen Liveaufnahmen. Es war ein Geniestreich von Frank Zappa & The Mothers - ein fantastisches Konzept-Livealbum. Genau der passende Vorgänger für das im Oktober 1971 veröffentlichte, bahnbrechende Hauptwerk „200 Motels“, der surrealistischen Dokumentation plus Soundtrack, die irgendwann ein Eigenleben entwickelte. Nichtsdestoweniger gelang es auch „Fillmore East - June 1971“, dem bedeutsamen Livealbum mit dem gekritzelten Coverartwork, das an einen Bootleg erinnern sollte, seine eigene Art des damaligen Zeitgeists in Zappa-typscher de- und rekonstruierter Form einzufangen.

Ständig auf Tour, beendeten die Mothers das Jahr 1971 mit einigen Terminen in Europa, die sie zunächst nach Dänemark, Deutschland, in die Niederlande und nach Österreich führten, bevor sie am 4. Dezember 1971 in die Schweiz ankamen und im Casino, Montreux, eine Show auf die Bühne brachten, über die man heute noch spricht. Der Grund dafür ist ein verirrter Fan, der eine Leuchtpistole anzündete und damit den Laden in Schutt und Asche legte – einschließlich der kompletten Ausrüstung der Mothers abgesehen von einer einsamen Kuhglocke.

Dankenswerter Weise kamen Band und Publikum mehr oder weniger unverletzt davon, aber die nächsten Shows in Frankreich und Belgien konnten nicht stattfinden und bei den für den 10. und 11. Dezember 1971 angesetzten Konzerten im „Rainbow Theatre“ in London mussten sich die Mothers mit ausgeliehenem Equipment herumschlagen. Allerdings konnte wegen eines weiteren Ereignisses, das Zappas Leben für immer verändern sollte, letztendlich nur der Auftritt am 10. Dezember stattfinden. Nachdem die Band ein Cover des Beatles-Songs “I Want To Hold Your Hand” gespielt hatte, attackierte ihn ein durchgeknallter Fan und stieß ihn von der Bühne in den über dreieinhalb Meter tiefen Orchestergraben. Für eine Weile wusste niemand, ob Zappa den Sturz überlebt hatte und es herrschten Verunsicherung und Chaos, sowohl im Theater als auch draußen. In seiner 1989 erschienenen Autobiografie “The Real Frank Zappa Book” erinnert sich der Künstler: “Mein Kopf lag auf meiner Schulter und mein Hals war so verbogen, als ob ich mir das Genick gebrochen hätte. Ich hatte eine klaffende Wunde am Kinn, ein Loch im Hinterkopf, und ich hatte mir eine Rippe und ein Bein gebrochen. Ein Arm war außerdem gelähmt.” Als er endlich aus dem Krankenhaus entlassen wurde und in die Staaten zurückkehren konnte, verbrachte Zappa den größten Teil des nächsten Jahres mit Beinschiene im Rollstuhl. Am Ende blieben ihm eine tiefere Stimme, ein kürzeres Bein und chronische Rückenschmerzen. Die Show im Rainbow Theatre stellte sich auch als die letzte mit Flo und Eddie heraus, da sich diese Besetzung der Mothers notgedrungen auflöste, als Zappa sich im Krankenhaus erholte, denn die Musiker mussten weiterarbeiten. Als es Zappa wieder besser ging, schlug er neue musikalische Wege ein.
