For years, Rinaldo Alessandrini and the Concerto Italiano ensemble have been world-wide ambassadors of our country’s grand vocal tradition. Their return to the Quartetto this season is dedicated to Monteverdi, one of the fathers of modern music. Among the nearly infinite Monteverdian themes to choose among, they have opted for Night, an ideal backdrop for amorous passions and ecstatic visions. As one of the most splendid madrigals from the Seventh Book declares, amorous combats take place by starlight, as, for instance, the one between Tancredi and Clorinda: this fulcrum of the new style was propounded by the composer and defended by him, in opposition to academic doctrine, in the preface to the Fifth Book. Night also receives the nymph’s laments about lost love, as well as the mixed sounds “of sighs, of kisses and of words” exchanged between Florida and her lover. The torment and sweetness of amorous nights dissolve, in the end, with the breaking of dawn in the east, which is splendid – but not as splendid as the beauty of the poet’s lady, according to Gabriello Chiabrera’s Mannerist paragon, set to music by Monteverdi in the Scherzi musicali for three voices.

Die Interpretationen von Rinaldo Alessandrini und seinem Concerto Italiano haben die Wahrnehmung der italienischen Musik des 17. und 18. Jahrhundert maßgeblich geprägt (die Aufnahmen der Madrigale Monteverdis haben international höchste Anerkennung erhalten) und das Ensemble zu einem der herausragenden Klangkörper seiner Art gemacht. Neben der Aufführung und Einspielung bekannter Werke widmen sich die Musiker auch der Wiederentdeckung vergessener Kompositionen dieser Zeit.

Concerto Italiano war bereits auf nahezu allen bedeutenden Konzert- und Festivalpodien zu Gast, so in London (Lufthansa Festival und Queen Elisabeth Hall), Paris (Cité de la Musique, Theatre de la Ville und Theatre des Champs Elysées), Wien (Konzerthaus), Graz (Styriarte), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Utrecht (Oude Muziek Festival), Brüssel (Flandern Festival), Barcelona, Montpellier, Berlin (Philharmonie), Köln, Stuttgart, Rom, Mailand (Scala), Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Warschau, Krakau, Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón), Rio de Janeiro (Teatro S. Paolo), New York (Metropolitan Museum und Lincoln Center), Washington, Tokyo, Australien, Neuseeland u.v.m.

In den vergangenen Saisons ging das Ensemble u.a. auf eine ausgedehnte Tour mit Monteverdis „Orfeo“ (Italien, Spanien und Belgien) und führte Pergolesis “Missa Romana” und Scarlattis “Weihnachts-Messe” im Rahmen der Eröffnungskonzerte bei den „Resonanzen“ im Wiener Konzerthaus auf. Daneben gestaltete Concerto Italiano einen viel beachteten Monteverdi-Zyklus mit sämtlichen Madrigalbüchern beim Edinburgh Festival und gastierte mit Vivaldis “Armida” in Paris und Wien. Mit einem Zyklus der drei Monterverdi-Opern unter der Leitung von Bob Wilson konnte man das Ensemble kürzlich an der Mailänder Scala und der Opera Garnier in Paris erleben.

2017 steht wiederum im Zeichen des Jubilars Monteverdi. Concerto Italiano wird u.a. mit dessen Vespern, dem „Orfeo“ und „L’incoronazione di Poppea“ auf Welttournee gehen.

Concerto Italiano nimmt regelmäßig für das Label Naïve auf. Unten den bisherigen CDs, die mit zahlreichen Preisen der internationalen Fachpresse ausgezeichnet wurden, finden sich Monteverdis „Orfeo“, eine Sammlung geistlicher Musik Scarlattis, Monteverdis 8. Madrigalbuch, Bachs Brandenburgische Konzerte, Monteverdis 1610 Vespern und die „Selva Morale e Spirituale“. Die neueste Einspielung „Night. Stories of Lovers and Warriors“ enthält weltliche Musik Monteverdis.
