Die Besetzung der Band macht schon mal neugierig. Tino Derado (p), Andreas Lang (b) und Sebastian Merk (dr) sind drei bekannte, super erfahrene Jazzmusiker in Berlin und weit darüber hinaus. George Kontomichalis hätte sich kaum bessere Musiker für sein Albumdebüt und seine gefühlvolle Musik aussuchen können. Außerdem betont der Altsaxophonist aus Leipzig: „Das ist nicht nur eine Studiobesetzung, sondern eine feste Gruppe. Wir werden weiterhin zusammen spielen.“

Der Name des Tenorsaxophonisten, der mehrfach zu Gast ist, sorgt für zusätzliche Brillanz: Johannes Enders. „Es war eine große Ehre für mich, dass er seine Teilnahme angeboten hat“, sagte Kontomichalis. Enders ist einer der großen Saxophonisten des deutschen Jazz, bekannt auch aus dem weiteren Umfeld der Indie / Elektro / Rock / Jazz-Avantgarde-Band Notwist. Hier bewegt er sich souverän auf reinem, klassischem Jazz-Terrain. Die formale Einordnung übernimmt der Leader selbst: „Das ist ein Straight-Ahead-Album mit Elementen des Post-Bop.“

Kontomichalis weiß genau, was er tut, und er kennt die historischen Jazz-Zusammenhänge. Entscheidend ist, dass der Altsaxophon-Spezialist darin seine eigene Stimme gefunden hat. Die Kompositionen, das Formenbewusstsein, der leidenschaftliche Ausdruck: All das trägt eine klare, persönliche Handschrift.

George Kontomichalis
is a saxophonist, composer and educator based in Leipzig, Germany. He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece began playing the flute at early age and received his first music theory lessons. At the age of 13 he switched to saxophone, studied classical Music at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki and at the same time took his first jazz lessons. After high school graduation he studied Music Pedagogy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

In 2016 he moved in Dresden, Germany to Study Jazz Saxophone as well as improvisation at the HFM-University „Carl Maria von Weber “with Prof. Finn Wiesner and Prof. Matthias Bätzel. He graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor degree in Jazz Performance and during his studies gained the DAAD prize (German Academic Exchange Service) for the best academic record. One year later he continued his Master studies at the HMTUniversity „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ in Leipzig under the mentorship of Johannes Enders. He has also attended masterclasses with renowned Jazz musicians, among others Mark Turner, Jim Snidero, Gilad Hekselman, Billy Hart, Till Brönner, Rosario Giuliani.
