Heutzutage ist es merkwürdig eine Rockband zu sein. observiert Max Kerman, der Sänger, Gitarrist und Co- Songwriter der Band ARKELLS. Es fühlt sich praktisch so an, als wäre Rockmusik total konservativ und unsicher über dessen Platz in der Welt geworden. Wenn ich ganz ehrlich bin, höre ich zurzeit selbst nicht sonderlich viel Rockmusik. Dieses ist nicht wirklich als radikale Aussage zu bezeichnen, wenn es von Mittzwanzigern in dieser EDM-dominierten Zeit stammt, aber es ist ein wenig ungewöhnlich, so etwas von einem Gitarristen einer Rockband zu hören. Die aus einer düsteren Industriestadt stammenden Musiker sind inzwischen Juno Award und Gold Gewinner geworden, womit sie definitiv bewiesen, dass es doch noch einen Platz für ambitionierte Rocker in dieser vom Mainstream überschwemmten Welt gibt. 2015 waren sie sogar die am häufigsten vertretene Band auf Kanadischen Alternativ- Radiostationen. Tatsächlich aber ist das neue Album der Band MORNING REPORT deutlich pietätloser: Es bedient sich viel eher an altbekannten cut-and-paste Herangehensweisen alter Hip-Hop Beatmaschienen anstatt am plug-and-play Liveklang herkömmlicher Rockbands: Quantisierte Rhythmen, Soundsamples, Elektronische Beats, Sax- und Geigeninstrumente sind angenehm in den krassen Mix untergemischt.
