Info for Pigeon Coup

Pigeon Coup is the debut album from London-based singer songwriter Daniel Mulhern. Recorded at Ray Davies' Konk Studios, the album was recorded with a group of hugely talented musicians, the end result being a set of melodious and perfectly crafted pop songs.

The album was recorded using predominantly vintage equipment, which has captured the immediacy of the performances and complimented the songs with warmth and clarity. Why the title? It became apparent to Daniel at an early stage of the recording that pigeons were a recurring theme; in the recording studio, in his flat... he realised he was living in a modern day version of The Birds, thankfully without the eye pecking.

Pigeon Coup is a debut of impressive quality. Employing classic songwriting, memorable melodies and intelligent lyrics performed with sincerity.

His voice has been described as possessing an intimacy capable of handling a variety of musical environments with equal conviction. Influences include Mike Scott, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Roddy Frame, Neil Finn and Badly Drawn Boy and his voice and songs bear witness to this.

Daniel Mulhern spearheads a new generation of intelligent London-based acoustic artists. His voice possesses an intimacy capable of handling a variety of musical environments with equal conviction, lending itself perfectly to the immaculately orchestrated rock infused folk ballads his voice gently meanders through. Daniel's influences include Mike Scott, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Roddy Frame and Neil Finn. Daniel is also a successful multi-media composer. His varied works include several BBC documentary series', hit drama Silent Witness, productions with Derren Brown, Matt Lucas & David Walliams, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and songs for acclaimed Stephen Poliakoff dramas.

As a TV and Film songwriter, Daniel's venture as an acoustic artist was all about recharging his creative batteries and fulfilling the boyhood dream. Nowadays, Daniel is working with some of London's most capable session musicians, quickly gaining respect as an acoustic artist on London's live circuit and is poised to return with some real acoustic gems.

As a composer and songwriter Daniel has worked in a variety of areas - from drama and serious arts, science and social documentaries, to entertainment and comedy.

As a musician, he can be heard on the work of other composers and songwriters, including scores for Stephen Poliakoff films and numerous BBC Dramas and documentaries. He uses an assorted collection of instruments including folk instruments from South America and China, and vintage pedal steel and Gretsch guitars. Technology also plays a large part in his playing and composition, and he's always on the lookout for new tools and techniques to bring out fresh ideas.

A largely self-taught musician, Daniel cut his compositional teeth writing music for student films on the respected Film and Animation degree courses at the art college near where he grew up.

His first television composition job was a Channel 4 documentary series in 2000, which quickly led to more TV music composing work.

In 2006 he released Pigeon Coup - an album as a singer-songwriter, on the NAIM Label. His recent songwriting collaborators include Jon Allen (who was on the BBC Radio 2 playlist regularly throught 2009) and Craig Gannon (The Smiths, Aztec Camera). Daniel's own songs have appeared in TV dramas including three different Stephen Poliakoff films.
